Description
Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) encourages research grant applications (R21) from institutions/organizations that propose to investigate the basic science and mechanisms of action underlying the biomechanical, immunological, endocrinological and/or neurophysiological consequences of manual therapies, such as spinal manipulation, mobilization and massage therapy. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R21 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-209, that encourages applications under the R01 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
